Shoulder Rehabilitation

As a “ball and socket” joint, the glenohumeral joint (what we think of as the “shoulder”) has a lot of mobility. In fact, it is typically the most mobile joint in the entire body. With all the shoulder’s mobility comes the inherent need for stability. We get some stability from supporting ligaments and cartilage, but most of its stability comes from a strong, balanced and coordinated muscular system.

Common causes of shoulder pain

  • Labral tears are common and can be caused by either an acute injury or by repetitive stress. Common symptoms include shoulder pain, “clicking” or “popping” and feelings of instability in the shoulder.
  • Rotator cuff tears are common, even in individuals with no shoulder pain. These can be caused by either acute or repetitive use injuries.
  • The acromioclavicular joint (AC joint) sits at the top of the shoulder and is often sprained when falling onto your shoulder, running into and object or falling onto an outstretched arm. Pain is typically felt when reaching across your chest, overhead or when directly pressing on the joint.
  • Arthritis can affect the shoulder as well, restricting motion and limiting strength due to pain.

Non-surgical options: In most cases of shoulder pain or injury, physical therapy is the first line of treatment. Even if you have a labral tear or rotator cuff tear, evidence shows that physical therapy can be just as effective as surgery in many cases. You are also likely to save on costs and time loss.

Post-surgical care: Following shoulder surgery such as labral repair, rotator cuff repair, debridement, acromioplasty, joint replacement or reconstruction, physical therapy care is integral in helping you to restore motion, strength and function and to reduce your pain.
If you are looking for relief from your shoulder pain, call us now to schedule an examination with one of our skilled orthopedic physical therapists for a specific diagnosis and individualized treatment plan to get you moving in the right direction.

Same Day Splint Service: Performed by Certified Hand Therapist

Wrist, thumb or finger pain is a common problem after an injury. People often turn to bracing to help reduce swelling or pain and allow an injury to rest and heal. With the loads of braces out there, it is often hard to know if you can get by with an off-the-shelf brace or if you need custom splinting. Therapists at Armworks Hand Therapy can help you get the best fitting brace for your injury.

There are essentially two types of splints: Pre-fabricated and Custom. A pre-fabricated splint is one made to be used for general injuries/ problems and usually come in a small, medium, or large size. A pre-fabricated splint can be very helpful but is not always the right size or does not come in the proper position for certain problems. Often, a custom splint is helpful. A custom splint is made to fit just you. It is made from a low temperature plastic and formed right in the clinic.

If you have questions about splinting for the elbow, wrist, or hand, contact us at Armworks Hand Therapy for an evaluation.

I attended Gresham Armworks for approximately 3 months for occupational therapy on my tennis elbow.

Facility: Well-equipped and modern. Facilities were always clean and there was always plenty of parking.

Armworks had their own office and shared-use of a full gym setup specifically for physical therapy needs. The office was kept at a good temperature. Early on there was a temperature differential felt between 2 different spots in the office. This was mitigated and now the office maintains a steady temperature throughout.

Staff: I was seen by pretty much everyone that worked there at one point or another. This included the Owner, Ryan, 3 full-time employees, and one college intern. All of them were both friendly AND professional. They remembered your name and always made you feel like family. There was never a time that I doubted that these employees could be the best of friends outside of work, professionalism was top notch. Upon graduation you are treated to a small gift and a word of congratulations from the staff that while not necessary, added to the “family feel” of this business.

Service: I was skeptical at first with the whole “therapy” concept. I was pleasantly surprised that after only a couple visits my healing rate and increased exponentially. Now, I know that individual results may vary, but it seemed like that all patients that were there when I had an appointment were similarly satisfied with their results. Near-complete recovery was obtained far ahead of my expectations.

Additional: I was provided with what the office refereed to as my “toolbox” for after-care success. This included various exercises listed on paper, some physical therapy tools such as bands and bars as well as a couple different household items to help massage my arm. I was encouraged to continue doing the exercises despite not having any pain.

Overall I am very satisfied with Gresham Armworks and would not hesitate to recommend it to family, friends, and of course the internet. 🙂

I worked with Patrick Clinton and Kylie Crawford several months ago, and they were absolutely amazing. Very professional, attentive, and caring. They helped me so much with my back and my shoulder after some serious injuries. And now I am working with Deborah Thomas and Amy Karla on my left hand after a nerve repair surgery, and things are looking great. I don’t know what I would do without their therapeutic work. They are both absolutely the best. I would recommend these therapists to anyone who needs their help.

Having been an athlete all my life, I was very discouraged to discover that I needed knee surgery. If you are like me, losing the ability to move around freely and do all the physical activities you are accustomed to doing is a real blow. Crutches for 6 weeks was true torture. The team at SportsCare Physical Therapy met me where I was at physically, mentally and emotionally. They recognized that I was not trying to simply regain use of my knee, but rather to reach the level of strength and mobility I had pre surgery, and beyond. Each individual that I had the pleasure of working with cared genuinely about my therapy, evidenced by the level of care and concern exhibited each visit. I am particularly grateful to have been treated by Mr. Kevin Eischen. His insight and expertise, combined with an amiable and positive demeanor, provide his patients with an effective and enjoyable recovery experience. The Gresham office of SportsCare Physical Therapy carries my highest recommendation.
